What is Ear Aesthetics (Otoplasty)?
Ear aesthetics, medically known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting congenital or acquired deformities, especially in the outer ear. Although this condition, commonly known as prominent ears, does not pose any health risks, it can cause individuals to feel uncomfortable with their appearance and lead to a lack of self-confidence over time. Otoplasty surgeries are an effective solution to address aesthetic concerns and enhance psychosocial adaptation.
Other Aesthetic Problems of the Ear
Besides prominent ears, other aesthetic issues that can be seen in the ears include disproportionate size (large or small), cartilage deformities, and post-traumatic shape distortions. These types of problems can be seen in both children and adults. Conditions such as symmetry issues, forward-leaning ears, and loss of earlobe form may also require aesthetic intervention.
When Should Otoplasty Be Performed?
Ear development is largely completed in childhood. Especially by the age of 5-6, 80% of the ears have developed. For this reason, the preschool period is considered the ideal time for otoplasty. Operations performed at these ages reduce the psychological impact children may experience in the future and help them participate in social life with more confidence. However, aesthetic operations can be performed at any age.
How is Ear Aesthetics Surgery Performed?
Otoplasty surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the patient's needs. During the surgical procedure, an incision is usually made behind the ear, which prevents the formation of visible scars. The cartilage structure is reshaped to bring the ear to a normal position. The risk of scarring is at a minimum level, and the scar almost completely disappears within a few years.
What is the Post-Operative Process?
During the first few days after the operation, mild pain, edema, or sensitivity may be seen in the ear area. In some cases, bandages are applied to maintain the shape of the ear. The recovery period is generally fast; the patient can return to normal life within a few days. Using an ear-protective band or bandage for the period recommended by the doctor supports the permanence of the aesthetic results.
