Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction aims to aesthetically and functionally reshape the breast through surgical procedures performed after a mastectomy (removal of breast tissue). This process is not just a physical recovery; it also means the reconstruction of female identity, body integrity, and psychological balance.

Breast reconstruction applied with modern techniques is carried out using three main methods:

Breast Reconstruction with Abdominal Tissue (Autogenous Reconstruction - Own Tissue)

In this method where the patient's own body tissues are used, aesthetic naturalness and tissue compatibility are at the highest level.

Features:
• Generally, skin and fat tissue taken from the abdominal area are used (DIEP or TRAM flap).
• It is transferred to the breast area using microsurgical techniques.
• It is particularly advantageous for patients whose tissue quality has deteriorated after radiotherapy.
• An appearance very close to the natural form of the breast is achieved.
• Small revisions may be required over time.
• Recovery time usually varies between 4–6 weeks.

Alternative Donor Sites:
• Back muscle (Latissimus Dorsi): Generally used together with a silicone prosthesis.
• Upper hip area (SGAP flap)
• Inner thigh area (PAP flap)

These areas can be safely preferred in cases where abdominal tissue is not sufficient.

2. Breast Reconstruction with Prosthesis (Silicone Prosthetic Reconstruction)

It is a suitable option for patients seeking a shorter surgery and recovery period.

Features:
• Silicone prostheses containing gel or saline are used.
• If the skin has sufficient elasticity, the prosthesis is placed directly.
• If the skin is insufficient, a temporary tissue expander is placed first, followed by the permanent prosthesis.
• Modern silicone prostheses are safe; they do not carry the risk of bursting or leaking.
• The risk of complications is low, but conditions such as infection can rarely be seen.
• Return to normal life usually occurs within 2–4 weeks.

3. Hybrid Breast Reconstruction (Prosthetic Reconstruction Supported by Fat Injection)

This method, where the prosthesis and the patient's own fat tissue are used together, provides both a natural appearance and improvement in tissue quality.

Features:
• Several sessions of fat injection are applied after the tissue expander.
• Skin quality and thickness are increased.
• It supports recovery in tissue damage due to radiotherapy.
• More natural contours are obtained by reducing the prosthesis volume.
• Recovery time varies between 2–4 weeks.

Which Method Is Suitable For You?

Breast reconstruction is a personalized process. Which method will be preferred is determined according to the patient's general health status, previous treatments, body structure, and expectations. After the examination and detailed evaluation, the most suitable treatment plan for you is created together.
