What is Ear Aesthetic Surgery (Otoplasty)?
Ear aesthetic surgery, medically known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting congenital or acquired deformities of the outer ear. Commonly referred to as prominent ears, this condition does not pose any health risks, but it can cause dissatisfaction with appearance and lead to self-confidence issues over time. Otoplasty procedures provide an effective solution to eliminate aesthetic concerns and improve psychosocial well-being.
Other Aesthetic Problems Seen in the Ear
Besides prominent ears, other common ear-related aesthetic issues include disproportionate size (too large or too small), cartilage deformities, and post-traumatic deformities. These problems can be seen in both children and adults. Cases such as ear asymmetry, forward tilting, or loss of shape in the earlobe may also require surgical intervention.
When Should Otoplasty Be Performed?
Ear development is largely completed during childhood. By the ages of 5–6, approximately 80% of ear development is complete. For this reason, the ideal time for otoplasty surgery is before school age. Operations performed during this period help reduce potential psychological effects and allow children to participate in social life with greater confidence. However, ear aesthetic procedures can be performed at any age.
How is Otoplasty Performed?
Otoplasty surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s needs. During the operation, an incision is usually made behind the ear, which prevents the formation of visible scars. The cartilage is reshaped to reposition the ear into a normal position. The risk of scarring is minimal, and any traces generally fade almost completely within a few years.
What is the Recovery Process Like?
In the first few days following surgery, patients may experience mild pain, swelling, or tenderness in the ear area. In some cases, bandages are applied to help maintain the new ear shape. Recovery is usually quick; most patients return to their normal routines within a few days. Wearing protective headbands or bandages for the period recommended by the surgeon supports long-term, stable results.
