Liposuction (Fat Removal) for a Fitter Body
Liposuction, also known as fat removal, is a procedure in which stubborn fat deposits that cannot be eliminated through diet or exercise are removed from different areas of the body using special vacuum systems. Liposuction is not a weight loss method but rather an effective surgical procedure performed for body contouring and regional slimming.
Liposuction surgery, which can be performed on adults of all ages, is preferred to achieve more aesthetic and proportional body contours. The procedure can be applied to many areas such as the abdomen, back, waist, thighs, hips, legs, arms, and chin. It can also be combined with other surgeries such as neck lift, abdominoplasty, or breast reduction.
Liposuction can be performed using three different techniques: traditional liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, and laser liposuction. In addition, depending on the amount of fluid injected before the procedure, it is classified as dry, wet, or super-wet technique. Today, the most commonly used method is the super-wet technique, in which fat cells are swollen with special solutions and then removed through 1 cm incisions with the help of cannulas.
In the ultrasonic liposuction method, ultrasonic vibrations are applied to the targeted area, softening the fat tissues. This allows the fat to be removed more easily and evenly. Laser liposuction, on the other hand, is a more advanced technique. With 2–3 mm fiber cannulas, laser beams liquefy the fat cells, which are then suctioned out through tiny incisions. This method is particularly preferred by individuals with high aesthetic concerns due to its minimal scarring risk.
During a liposuction operation, either local or general anesthesia can be used. Some pain may occur after surgery; however, it can usually be controlled within 3–4 days. With the help of prescribed pain relievers and aftercare recommendations, this recovery period can be managed comfortably. Patients can generally return to their daily routines within 3 to 7 days. However, to ensure proper healing of the treated area and to maintain body shape, a liposuction compression garment should be worn for about 3–6 weeks.
