Why Doesn't Lip Filler Dissolve?

Undissolved lip filler generally occurs due to incorrect application, the filler remaining in the tissue for a long time, or techniques that are unsuitable for the tissue. In treatment, filler dissolving procedures or, in some cases, surgical methods like lip reduction may be preferred.

Undissolved lip filler is the condition where the filler material does not dissolve within the expected time or acts as if it is permanent in the lip. Lip filling is usually performed with hyaluronic acid-based substances and is expected to be slowly broken down by the body over time. However, in some patients, it can be seen that the filler does not dissolve within the expected time, causing hardness, asymmetry, swelling, or an irregular appearance in the lip.

The answer to the question of why lip filler doesn't dissolve is not the same for every patient. The structure of the product used, the amount of filler, the depth of application, previous repetitive procedures, and the individual's tissue characteristics can be effective in this process.

Why Does Undissolved Lip Filler Occur?

Under normal conditions, temporary fillers are expected to diminish within a certain period. But in some cases, the filler may remain in the tissue for a longer time or may overflow outside the lip, distorting the lip form. This condition, known in medical terminology and among patients as filler migration (displacement of the filler), causes the filler to spread towards the mustache area and leads to an unesthetic appearance.

  • Application of dense or excessive amounts of filler
  • Use of a filler material unsuitable for the tissue
  • Superficial or irregular placement of the filler
  • Repetitive lip filler procedures
  • Development of hardness or a capsule-like reaction in the lip tissue

In such cases, the lip may lose its natural form. The lip line may become indistinct, the lips may appear excessively large compared to facial proportions, or an esthetically disturbing appearance may occur for the patient.

Such problems occurring after lip fillers often cause anxiety in patients. However, with correct evaluation and appropriate treatment, these conditions can be safely corrected.

These types of situations can create esthetic anxiety in most patients, but with proper planning, the lip form can be restored to a natural and balanced state.

How is Undissolved Lip Filler Corrected?

In undissolved lip filler, the initial evaluation aims to understand the type of filler and the problem it has caused in the lip. If the substance used is hyaluronic acid-based, a filler dissolving procedure may come to the agenda. In this procedure, a special enzyme called hyaluronidase is used to safely dissolve the filler in the tissue.

However, not every undissolved lip filler can be corrected solely with a dissolving procedure. If the filler has been in the lip for a long time, has been applied densely, or has caused a significant deformity in the lip tissue, surgical options should be evaluated.

Therefore, the treatment plan must be determined individually according to the patient's lip structure, the amount of filler, its distribution, and the deformation it has created.

Is Lip Reduction a Solution for Undissolved Filler?

Lip reduction can be an effective solution, especially for patients with excessive volume increase, thickening, asymmetry, and form distortion in the lip.

In my clinical practice, I prefer to evaluate lip reduction surgery in cases where merely dissolving the filler is not sufficient and the lip form is distorted.

The lip reduction procedure can provide a permanent correction in excess volume and deformities caused by undissolved filler.

How is Lip Reduction Performed?

Lip reduction surgery is performed with incisions made from the inside of the lip.

During the procedure, excess tissue is removed in a controlled manner, and the lip is made more balanced.

Filler Dissolving or Surgery?

In mild cases, filler dissolving may be sufficient. However, in advanced cases, surgery gives more effective results.
