Why Does Neck Sagging Occur and Is It the Same in Every Patient?
Neck sagging often appears as one of the most prominent signs of aging; however, this condition cannot be explained solely by skin laxity, as the underlying muscle structure, fat tissue, and the effects of gravity must be evaluated together. In my own practice, I do not treat neck sagging as a single problem; I see that it manifests at different levels in every patient, and therefore, I always perform the evaluation with a detailed examination.
During this evaluation, the prominence of the platysma bands, the state of folds and wrinkles in the neck skin, and the degree of skin sagging are particularly decisive for me. This is because these three factors directly change the treatment plan, and even two patients who appear similar may require completely different approaches.
Can Neck Sagging Be Corrected with Non-Surgical Methods?
In the early stages of neck sagging and in patients where sagging is minimal, non-surgical methods may provide a certain degree of benefit; however, it is necessary to correctly determine the limits of these methods because not every patient benefits from these applications in the same way. According to my observations, I frequently see that in patients where sagging has become prominent, a lot of time is wasted with non-surgical methods, only to require surgery later. Therefore, making the right plan at the beginning is very important.
How Does Neck Lift Surgery Work?
For patients with prominent neck sagging, the most effective solution is neck lift surgery because this procedure is not limited only to removing excess skin; it also involves tightening the underlying muscle structure and repositioning the tissues. In this way, a clearer and more youthful neck contour is obtained; however, what matters here is not just stretching the skin but moving the tissues in the correct vectors.
Which Is More Effective: Neck Lift or Face Lift?
According to my approach, there is no single answer to this question because which method is more effective depends on the patient's current condition. However, I can clearly say that interventions performed only on the neck region may create an incompatibility between the face and neck in some patients, which can result in an unnatural appearance.
In my own practice, I believe that planning for patients with neck sagging should involve a facelift combined with a neck lift, rather than a neck lift alone. This is because moving the tissues not only backwards but also upwards provides more natural and longer-lasting results.
For this reason, I evaluate facelift and rejuvenation procedures together with a neck lift for most patients, as this approach ensures a more balanced result by preserving the integrity of the face and neck.
Why Does a Combined Approach Give Longer-Lasting Results?
When the neck and face are evaluated together, the result obtained is more permanent because aging manifests itself not only in the neck area but also in the lower and middle regions of the face. In my own practice, I observe that patients for whom I plan these two regions together achieve both a more natural appearance and a longer-lasting result.
Conversely, in interventions performed only on the neck region, an unbalanced result may emerge in some patients where the face looks aged while the neck looks tighter, which may not meet the patient's expectations.
In Which Patients Do I Recommend Doing Them Together?
According to my evaluation, for patients where neck sagging is prominent, laxity in the facial area has started, and who expect longer-lasting results, performing a facelift together with a neck lift is a more correct approach because a single-region intervention is usually not sufficient for these patients.
However, since every patient's expectation, age, and general health status are different, the final decision must be made specifically for the individual.
How Does the Post-Surgery Process Proceed?
Although the recovery process varies by patient, in my own practice, I observe a significant recovery in most patients within the first 2-3 weeks. Returning to social life is usually possible within a few weeks, but it may take an average of 6 to 9 months for the tissues to fully settle and the final result to emerge. Being patient during this process and knowing that the changes seen in the early period are temporary is very important.
How Is a Natural Appearance Achieved?
According to my approach, the most important goal is to achieve a natural and balanced result because the aim is not to change the patient completely but to provide a more rested and youthful appearance. Therefore, the most correct approach is to avoid exaggerated interventions and plan in accordance with the anatomical structure of the face and neck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can neck sagging be corrected without surgery?
Non-surgical methods may be beneficial for minimal sagging, but for prominent sagging, surgical methods provide more effective and permanent results.
Is a neck lift sufficient on its own?
It may be sufficient for some patients, but in my own practice, I observe that more balanced results are achieved in most patients when planned together with the face.
Which is more effective: neck lift or face lift?
According to my approach, surgery performed together with a facelift provides more effective and long-lasting results for patients with prominent neck sagging.
Will there be scars after surgery?
Scars are usually hidden around the ears and within the scalp and are often not noticed.
How permanent is the result?
Long-lasting and natural results can be achieved with the correct technique and planning.
